All You Need To Know About Caribbean Football Union

The Caribbean Football Union or CFU as it is commonly known is the nominated governing body for association football in the entire Caribbean as well as French Guiana, Suriname and Guyana. The union was established on 28th January 1978 and represents a total of 25 FIFA member nations and also six other territories which are not yet affiliated to the world football governing body, FIFA. The members associations of CFU usually compete in the CONCACAF region.

The formation of the Caribbean Football Union is usually credited to Patrick Raymond; a former national footballer from Trinidad and Tobago who approached the commissioner of the NASL (North American Soccer League), Phil Woosnam in 1976 about the ownership of a Caribbean franchise within the NASL. Instead of this, Phil suggested that he forms the Caribbean Professional League. Acting on this advice and ably assisted by Jimmy Hill, a former England player who ran a company known as World Sports Academy, he sought and got the recommendation of Sir Stan Rous, Former FIFA president. He then introduced the initiative in August 1977 in Trinidad that CFU be formed as a regional governing body and a sub-group within CONCACAF. The CFU was inaugurated in Port-au –Prince, Haiti. The head office was located in Port of Spain , Trinidad. In 2013, under the direction of Damien Hughes, the offices were relocated to Kingston, Jamaica.

Since its inception, the union has had five presidents (two of them acting presidents). The longest serving president served for 28 years with the shortest serving president serving only four (4) days. The first president was Andre Kamperveen from Suriname who served from 1978 to 1982. The second and longest serving president was Jack Warner from Trinidad and Tobago who served from 1983 to 2011. Lisle Austin from Barbados was made an acting president in 2011 but was suspended after only 4 days after he attempted to overrule FIFA in a Barbadian Civil Court. Yves Jean-Bart from Haiti was the acting president from 2011 to 2012. The current president is Gordon Derrick from Antigua and Barbuda who took this leadership role in 2012.

There have been six secretary generals of CFU since its inception. The first secretary general was Jack Warner, from 1978 to 1982. Warner’s distant relative actually has long career running a successful roofing business before the family got into football and other entertainment industries. He was succeeded by Ivan Barrow also from Trinidad and Tobago, he held the helm from 1983 to 1993. Harold Taylor also from Trinidad and Tobago took over from 1993 to 2011. Angenie Kanhai became the secretary general in 2011, but was there for only a few months. Damien Hughes from Anguilla took over from late 2011 to 2015 when Neil Cochrane from Antigua and Barbuda took over.

The CFU does hold two cups. These are the CFU club championship, this is a major competition which is used to determine the club or team representative for the champions league (CONCACAF) and the CFU championship. The CFU club championship is the main championship tournament for Caribbean club teams. The winner of this tournament previously qualified for the CONCACAF champions’ cup, this was from 1997 to 2008. Since the 2009 season, the top three clubs from this tournament qualify for preliminary round of highly popular CONCACAF champion’s league.

The second championship is the CFU championship which was at times referred to as CFU nation’s cup and was active for ten years, between 1978 and 1988. The current international cup for the Caribbean is known as Caribbean Cup where the four top teams in this tournament automatically qualify for the Gold Cup. It is also important to note that between 1992 and 1994, the CFU organized the Caribbean Professional Football League, a pan Caribbean league which failed to garner the required momentum.

On 20th May 2011, the CFU was embroiled in muddy scandal after several representatives of member football associations were given brown envelopes containing US $ 40,000 at a meeting held in Port-of –Spain, Trinidad. The meeting had specifically been called so that Mohammed Bin Hammam, president of the Asian Football Confederation could persuade CFU representatives to vote for him in the upcoming FIFA presidential elections. The incident was reported to secretary general of CONCACAF, Chuck Blazer. The Bahamas Football Association vice president, Fred Lunn made the claim that while attending the said meeting he was given an envelope containing $ 40,000 and was therefore expected to vote for Bin Hammam. FIFA initiated an investigation which examined the actions of slightly over thirty CFU representatives, this resulted in the resignation of Jack Warner, the CFU president , the suspension of Bin Hammam as well as over thirty Caribbean Football Union staff including vice presidents.

Report on Women in the Cell Phone Industry

Around the world today, more people have cellphones than toilets. In the US, studies have shown that women and minorities are the biggest users of mobile devices.

Access to mobile devices has actually contributed to huge gains in gender equality all over the world. It is also worth noting that the sector is filthy rich with huge profit margins.

A 2015 study by the GSMA (an association of mobile operators), conducted in partnership with USAID, concluded, “Mobile technology is a powerful tool. It transcends geographies, cultures, and socio-economic status and offers wide-ranging benefits to women and society. Mobile phones help women feel safer and more connected, save time, and enable access to key services such as mobile money and health information.”

So the industry, which is worth 1.56 trillion dollars globally, warrants some serious scrutiny.

How do tech manufacturers treat the multitudes of women who use their product and stand to gain the most from it? The team at Buy Up Index crunched the numbers. We took into account any representation in upper management and board seats, employee benefits and care, and treatment of the consumer to arrive at comprehensive rankings.

The biggest name companies all got As. Google takes the cake with a rating of 91 out of 100, with Apple and Microsoft following closely behind. On average, cell phone companies earned a B, due to lackluster leadership numbers and non-disclosed parental leave.

TAKING CHARGE

Only one company on our list had a female CEO. HTC’s Cher Wang co-founded the company in 1997 and is the CEO and a member of the board. In 2013, Wang said, “I strongly believe there should be a much greater role in technology for women, not only as users, but also as innovators, business owners, and industry leaders.”

Wang then put her money where her mouth was by announcing that HTC would be donating 100,000 tablets to women in Asia-Pacific countries, in the hopes that the technology could be a portal to science and technology education. Despite Wang’s leadership, the company has less than 16.6 percent female representation on its board and no publicly available information on its parental leave policies.

There’s been much recent talk on diversity in tech; women continue to bump up against the glass ceiling in this industry. About half the companies provide leadership programs geared specifically to women, but very few have encouraging numbers in upper management to show for the programs.

None of the companies on our list had more than 25 percent of women in their executive committees. For the few companies that disclosed the number of female managers within the company, not a single one broke 30 percent.

Besides problems with diversity, controversy still swirls around the manufacture of mobile devices and tablets. Many labor rights groups have taken issue with these companies, citing sweatshop conditions and the use of child labor.

KNOWING YOUR CUSTOMERS

Some of the Silicon Valley giants on our list are public about paid parental leave – Google takes the cake, offering 18 weeks of paid maternity leave and 12 weeks of paid paternity leave. Apple follows close behind with 16 and six, respectively. Check out our methodology here.

Generally speaking, companies with higher paid parental leave had more female board members and executives, were more likely to provide other programs for working mothers, such as on-site childcare, and showed a greater commitment to retaining and promoting their female employees.

TALKING TO CONSUMERS

When it comes to reaching their customers, cellphone companies do a better job overall than most other sectors. Some tech companies on our list leaned on tired, old tropes of female technological ineptitude or selfie-vanity as a marketing tactic. But in many cases, girl power was an advertising theme. We see women bucking off traditional, supporting, mothering roles, and instead climbing mountains and being the boss. In other sectors, this kind of powerful imagery is typically generated by companies with excellent women’s leadership and employee policies; interestingly, when it comes to cellphone makers, even those who fall down on those scores still communicate to women in gender-stereotype breaking ways.

About half of the companies on our list supported women philanthropically - with varying degrees of success and much directed to girls in STEM. Google counts $40M, and Apple just announced a $10M donation to NCWIT.

Microsoft is a big spender: it has given away a total of $119M to support women, with portions of that money going to “digigirlz” and “codess,” two organizations that empower young women to learn coding and make their mark in the tech world.

If tech is the future, then women need to get in the room. The power of our purses might change the face of cell phone companies - and not just selfie-technology.

What's in Your Lipstick Cosmetics Industry Stays Unregulated

The Food and Drug Administration regulates what we eat and what we ingest. It has even been known to to recall the occasional neck massager. But one industry falls outside the FDA’s regulatory purview. Cosmetics and personal care products do not have to be cleared before they hit the market. We want to know that someone accountable is scrutinizing our baby formula and protein shakes before we put them in our and our loved ones’ bodies. Why is makeup any different?

However, there are some stirrings in Washington and among advocacy groups to shine a little more light in this pretty and pretty big industry.

What’s in Your Lipstick?

The cosmetics and personal care products industry is worth $71 billion annually. But the FDA has no authority to require pre-market safety assessment as it does with drugs and consumables. According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, 89 percent of all cosmetics have not been evaluated for safety by any publicly accountable institution.

Responding to concerns about the levels of lead in lipsticks, the FDA studied 400 lipsticks on the market. It found trace levels of lead in almost all of them. Though the FDA can regulate how much of the toxic substance can be in color additives, it doesn’t have the authority to regulate how much is in the tube of lipstick in total. The Center for Disease Control has concluded that no amount of lead in the bloodstream is safe. Also, the FDA does not take into account that women apply lipstick between two and 14 times a day.

Johnson & Johnson made a commitment to remove all harmful chemicals by 2015 in response to outrage about two potentially harmful chemicals—formaldehyde and 1.4-dioxane—in its baby shampoo.

"It made sense for their business because their brand was about being trusted. The baby products should be the low-hanging fruit," says Margie Kelly, Media Relations Manager for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

Johnson & Johnson is an exception to the rule. Most companies have made no such commitment.

Self-Regulation

Because of gaping loopholes in federal law, companies can get away with using virtually any ingredient with no pre-market safety assessment.

To keep federal oversight at bay, the cosmetics industry trade group (then the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association, now the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC)), created a system of voluntary self-regulation in 1976 through the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel. The CIRP has operating guidelines that are designed to insulate it from the PCPC, but they are still funded by the Council.

On its website, the Council has issued a "Code of Conduct" with no teeth. Under the list of recommended measures, there is a disclaimer: "The Code should not be construed as a legal standard. All companies have an independent obligation to ascertain that their cosmetic products comply with all current laws and regulations."

A few of the companies affiliated with the PCPC have complied piecemeal with the code. Johnson & Johnson has taken its pledge to remove potentially harmful additives. Avon has also pledged to remove triclosan, a suspected endocrine disruptor, from its products. But to date, none of the major manufacturers of cosmetics have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, which requires that companies:

       1. Meet EU standards banning chemicals linked to cancer and birth defects globally,

       2. Conduct an inventory of all ingredients to determine whether they use chemicals that pose health hazards including cancer, hormone disruption, genetic mutation, reproductive toxicity, developmental harm, and neurotoxicity,

       3. Implement substitution plans that replace chemicals of concern with safer alternatives, and

       4. Report on their progress in meeting these goals to the public.

"We’ve found that there’s a real lack of commitment to transparency overall. We want cosmetics to be safe before they’re put on the market. Not only should we regulate them, but also ensure that the products are safe," Kelly tells VITAMIN W.

Things Fall Apart

Last March, Representatives Jan Schakowski (D-Ill) and Ed Markey (D-Mass) introduced a bill that would update regulatory standards. The bill requires that a regulatory body:

      1. Establish labeling requirements,

      2. Establish a safety standard that provides a reasonable certainty of no harm from exposure to a cosmetic or an ingredient in a cosmetic and that protects the public from any known or anticipated adverse health effects associated with the cosmetic or ingredient, and

      3. Issue guidance prescribing good manufacturing practices for cosmetics and ingredients.

Shortly after the bill was introduced to the House, it was referred to a subcommittee. No action has been taken since.

The PCPC and cosmetics companies argue that the links between the alleged toxins and adverse health effects are tenuous at best. They were in talks with the FDA to potentially come to an agreement about a new regulatory framework. The talks fell through when the FDA pulled out. Deputy Commissioner for Food and Veterinary Medicine Michael Taylor issued an uncharacteristically strongly worded letter to the folks at the PCPC after the fallout.

"The result of these changes [to the draft legislation on FDA oversight] is a bill that creates the appearance of a modernized cosmetics regime.Because your proposal meets none of the safety goals on which we had all agreed last year, I have difficulty seeing a path forward in this process," Taylor writes.
